Gallery 22, also known as Bullseye Pistol League, is a program of indoor target shooting with .22 cal. pistols.  It has the reputation for being the most challenging shooting activity to master, and it’s a lot of fun, challenging, and sometimes a little frustrating at times trying to achieve that.  We have many helpful members willing to assist you because we all want to become better shooters.  The league is managed by Western Michigan Pistol League, which is a group of shooters from multiple clubs in Southwest Michigan.  Membership in SMGC or KRGC is required to participate in the league at the SMGC range.

Teams of 4 to 6 shooters participate.  If you don’t have a team you may shoot as an independent if we can’t find a team opening for you.

The season runs 16 matches, starting in the first full week of December with 2 weeks off for the holidays.

You must shoot at least 12 matches to be eligible for individual awards.

Teams shoot one match per week.  Make-ups are allowed if you miss a match.

Time slots are typically available for Monday, Thursday, and Friday evenings.

Practice night is Wed 6-8pm.

Cost is $50 per person for the season, plus $25 per team. Juniors (under 18) do not pay the $50, so consider bringing your son or daughter if they are mature enough to follow pistol safety rules.  Additional cost is $5 per match for range/target fee, plus whatever you spend on ammunition (figure about 100 rounds per match).

Equipment required: Eye and ear protection, and a reliable .22 pistol.  Any style revolver or semi-automatic pistol that can hold 5 rounds is acceptable.  We have shooters that do well with basic Ruger Mark 3’s or 4’s, or Browning Buckmarks, so you don’t need a $1000 gun to participate. That said, a smooth trigger is worth spending a bit of money or effort on.  If you use a semi-automatic, it is nice to have 2 magazines.  Bring adequate ammunition, at least 100 rounds of ammo that will reliably cycle your pistol.  Any style sight or optic is acceptable but no projection lasers are allowed. This is an off-hand league so keep in mind you will be holding and firing your gun with only one hand.  Empty chamber flags are required and are usually available at the range.  A towel or mat is nice to have to lay your pistol on when the line is called safe.  A spotting scope or monocular can be pretty convenient, especially when sighting in your pistol.

Notes on ammunition.  Expensive target ammo, while being more accurate and consistent, is probably not worth the cost for intermediate or beginning shooters.  Standard velocity ammo is best if it will cycle your pistol reliably.  Bulk packed ammo (Federal Automatch, Winchester)  often works just fine for beginning or intermediate shooters.  High velocity ammo can be used but it’s louder and wears out your gun faster.  You may have to experiment with different brands to find one that works well with your gun. Going too cheap can be a problem, so avoid Remington Thunderbolt because it has been too inconsistent to reliably cycle a semi-automatic pistol.

Matches are held at the SMGC Indoor Range on Crosstown Blvd in Kalamazoo.

SMGC range safety rules are strictly followed and enforced.

A match starts with one practice target, 7 minutes, unlimited number of shots.

All targets are shot at a distance of 50 feet.

Course of fire for 9 targets (90 shots) per match:

At the end of the season there are awards for top shooters in each class.

Depending on COVID, there will also be an end of season banquet in May which includes a raffle when guns and equipment from On Target are awarded to some lucky winners.  The amount of raffle winnings depends on how many sign up for the league.
